Technical Briefing Paper #1: Clearcutting in Arkansas Forests

The issue of clearcutting in Arkansas forests has been attended by a great deal of publicity, public concern and controversy, highlighted by a call to ban it as a major harvesting practice on the Ouachita National Forest. Clearcutting as a public issue has arisen before in Arkansas history. This time it is being expanded by claims of some critics that other even-aged forest management regeneration practices - seed-tree and shelterwood methods - are essentially the same as clearcutting, produce the same results in terms of succeeding forest stands, have the same adverse ecological effects, and should be banned as well. Technical Briefing Paper #3: Wildlife and Biological Diversity in Arkansas Forests

Certain interest groups have expressed concern about the loss of wildlife habitat following application of forest management practices. Politicians are listening to their concerns and are proposing legislative action to restrict certain practices. Some of these groups feel, in particular, that even-aged management is very detrimental to some wildlife species. However, some foresters claim that even-aged management will increase forest productivity and may also increase biological diversity and provide improved wildlife habitats. Which viewpoint is correct? Is forest management good or bad for wildlife? More.
